What you want for your fern is for them to be able to get sunlight a few hours of the day, but is sheltered a little from the sunlight.
Usually, people will use the ferns in areas that are hidden from the sun most of the day. They will place ferns, some other flowers that do not like direct sunlight in a flowerbed to give the area some comfort, and to make a dark spot of the yard look lively.
